My Apple watch does not seem to be communicating completely with my iPhone. It says that my Watch is connected. For example, the Activity app on the watch is recording my activities but the app on the iPhone seems like it is frozen and not recording any activity. If that doesn't help, try to re-pair your Apple Watch to the iPhone. Another Great Apple Watch Feature. The ability to quickly and easily unlock your Mac with the Apple Watch might not have been a feature you previously knew about. But it's definitely a time-saving option that makes the Watch even more useful. Even if you reach out to Apple directly via phone or an Apple store, the personnel will politely explain this. Even a complete Device Firm Update DFU restore will not resolve access with another Apple ID saved in the phone. The purpose for this security is to maintain the previous device owner’s Apple ID.
The Apple Watch auto unlock feature only works on mid-2013 or new Macs. But Redditor jjborcean has figured out a hack for automatically unlocking his late 2012 Retina MacBook Pro with his Apple Watch.
Auto Unlock in watchOS 3 / macOS Sierra is only supported on mid-2013 or newer Mac models. Have an older Mac? You can get auto unlock working with a quick hardware upgrade!
The part you need is a newer AirPort card that supports AC wireless, for my late-2012 RMBP I used the following card:

Shut down your mac and disconnect the power, then proceed to open up your Mac. If you have a Retina MacBook Pro or MacBook Air you will need a P5 screwdriver to open the bottom case. Once inside simply replace the existing AirPort card with your new AC card.

Please note, I have not tried this myself, and I don’t have an older Mac on which to test this procedure. Proceed at your own risk. You can read the entire Reddit post and the comments here.

EDIT: Jake has solved the mystery for me (see posts below). Thanks! This is my first time trying to use this feature, and it's not working. This is my new 2019 iMac and I'm on macOS 10.15.5 and watchOS 6.2.5. In System Preferences > Security & Privacy I have 'Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac' selected. Two-Factor Authentication is on for my Apple ID. So, say I now go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy again and click the lock icon on the bottom left. Immediately I get a notification on my Apple Watch prompting me to double-click (the digital crown) to approve. However, when I do so, nothing happens. The window that says 'System Preferences is trying to unlock Security & Privacy preferences' doesn't go away, and I am forced to click the Use Password button. So I tried restarting both my Mac and Apple Watch. When I got the login screen, it said I had to enter my password to enable unlock with Apple Watch after restarting. So I did so. However, when I tried to unlock the Security & Privacy preferences again, it still didn't work. Also, I tried logging out and then logging back in again, and there is not even an option to log in using the Apple Watch. I also tried disabling and re-enabling the 'Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac' option but that didn't fix it either. What gives? EDIT: I discovered my Apple Watch DOES automatically unlock the iMac when resuming from display sleep or screen saver, but it's still not working to approve within apps and also not working when logging on.
